Key Vote: Youth Curfew

In October 2005, City Council considered a plan around security in Toronto Community Housing buildings in the Etobicoke York area. The most contentious element of the plan was Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti’s proposal to implement a curfew on youth under 16 in Etobicoke and York. Councillor Mammoliti has raised the idea of a youth curfew numerous times in the past, after an attack between two 12-year old girls, and in the debate around raves.

Rather than attempting to deal with issues facing young people in the city, this move would criminalize a large proportion of society, and would also be virtually unenforceable.

Vote Essentials:
That city staff investigate the feasibility of implementing a youth curfew in a trial basis in Etobicoke and York, and examine the effectiveness of youth curfews in other municipalities.
